Rey Mysterio Could Retire in 2027, According to New Report

Rey Mysterio may be nearing the end of his in-ring career. According to a new report, there has been backstage talk within WWE about the Hall of Famer retiring in 2027.
Nothing is official, and Mysterio has not announced any plans. But this is the first time a specific year has been attached to the end of one of the most important careers in WWE history.
What the report says
The report came from WrestleVotes on Fightful Select. A source said there is backstage chatter about Mysterio stepping away from full-time in-ring competition in 2027, and that WWE has started discussing ideas for how to present his farewell. The source also said they did not know when or where a retirement match might happen.
Dave Meltzer later added in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter that he was told a retirement tour in 2027 is "quite possible."
Mysterio is also expected to stay with the company after he stops wrestling. He already works as the on-screen general manager of Lucha Libre AAA, and the report suggests he would continue to help younger talent behind the scenes in WWE and AAA.
What Rey Mysterio has said about retiring
Mysterio has avoided putting a date on his retirement. Earlier this year, he told BANG Showbiz that he was enjoying his current role and preferred to take his career as it comes. In August, on Stephanie McMahon's podcast What's Your Story?, he admitted that retirement could come when he least expects it, but said he did not feel ready to step away yet.
He turns 52 in December and has been wrestling since 1989, which means 2027 would mark close to 38 years in the ring.
A career like no other
Few wrestlers have meant as much to as many fans as Rey Mysterio. He joined WWE in 2002 and quickly became one of the most popular Superstars in the company, proving that a smaller wrestler could be a main event star.
- He won the 2006 Royal Rumble and went on to win the World Heavyweight Championship at WrestleMania 22, a title win he dedicated to his late friend Eddie Guerrero.
- He won the WWE Championship in 2011.
- He has held the Intercontinental, United States and Cruiserweight Championships, along with multiple tag team titles.
- He was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2023, the same year he beat his son Dominik at WrestleMania 39.
He is still a regular on Raw today. On the October 19 episode, he challenged Chad Gable for the Intercontinental Championship in a triple threat match that also included Dragon Lee, but Gable rolled him up to retain.
How should Rey go out?
If 2027 really is the year, there is only one place for the final chapter to end: WrestleMania. A farewell tour would give fans around the world one more chance to see him, and it would be hard to imagine his last match without Dominik somewhere in the story, whether as an opponent or, finally, back at his father's side.
Whatever WWE decides, Rey Mysterio has earned the right to leave on his own terms. We will keep you updated as more news comes out.
