Matt Cardona Targets December 14 Return for the John Cena Classic

Matt Cardona wants to be back much sooner than planned. The injured SmackDown star posted on X on Tuesday, November 3, that he has a new target date: "I'm going to try to get cleared by December 14."
That date is the John Cena Classic, the new event Cena announced on Raw the night before. Cardona has been out since August with a torn triceps that needed surgery. Until now, he had talked about coming back at the Royal Rumble in early 2027.
How Cardona got hurt
Cardona tore his triceps in a match with Kit Wilson that was taped for Main Event before SmackDown on Friday, August 21, in Toronto. The match aired on the September 3 episode of Main Event. Cardona later said he felt a pop in his right arm after landing a dropkick early in the match.
He had surgery on August 25. A few days later, in a video on Instagram, he promised a fast recovery: "I'll be back, faster than the surgeon said, and I'm coming back to be the WWE Champion or I'm gonna die trying."
He gave a rough target in September on the podcast Casuals with Katie Nolan, saying the plan was to "maybe come back to the Royal Rumble." His new post moves that goal up by several weeks. WWE has not given any update on his medical status.
The timing hurt. Cardona rejoined WWE full-time on the first SmackDown of 2026, on January 2, when he returned as a surprise opponent for Kit Wilson and was signed to the blue brand. By August he was in a program with Gunther, who he faced on the August 14 SmackDown after Gunther insulted Cardona's wife, Chelsea Green.
What the John Cena Classic is
Cena revealed the details on the November 2 Raw in Brooklyn. You can read more in our story on John Cena's Raw return. Here is what WWE has confirmed so far:
- Date and place: Monday, December 14, at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at Walt Disney World near Orlando, Florida.
- How it airs: Live on Netflix as a special second episode of Raw that night. A regular Raw from Perth, Australia airs earlier the same day.
- Format: A tournament with Raw and SmackDown stars against NXT talent. Cena picks the field himself, and Club WWE members vote in real time for the top Superstar of the night.
- First entrant: Cody Rhodes. Cena says he will scout more names at NXT, on Raw and at Survivor Series.
- The next night: Worlds Collide on Tuesday, December 15, at the same complex, with WWE, NXT and AAA talent and an Avengers: Doomsday theme.
Two-day tickets go on presale Thursday, November 12, at 10 a.m. ET. The general sale starts Friday, November 13, at 10 a.m. ET.
Why this event fits Cardona
On paper, few people make more sense for a Cena-themed show. Cardona, then Zack Ryder, came up in WWE in the same era Cena ruled it. He won the United States Championship in 2011, the Intercontinental Championship at WrestleMania 32 and the Raw Tag Team Championship with Curt Hawkins at WrestleMania 35. A night built on fan votes also suits a wrestler whose career has always leaned on his bond with the crowd.
In our view, though, this is a goal, not a plan. Cardona has not been named to the tournament. Only Cody Rhodes has. Cardona also needs doctors to sign off on a triceps repair less than four months after surgery. Nothing here is confirmed yet.
What to watch next
- Whether Cardona gives a medical update in the coming weeks, or WWE adds him to the John Cena Classic field.
- Who else Cena picks while he scouts NXT, Raw and Survivor Series in Houston on November 28.
- If December 14 comes too soon, the Royal Rumble 2027 is still his fallback target.
