Paul Heyman Says Brock Lesnar Would Still Be UFC Champion, WWE Sources Call It "Promoter Mode"

Paul Heyman has made one of his boldest claims yet about Brock Lesnar. In a recent interview with Graham Bensinger, Heyman said that diverticulitis was the only thing that stopped Lesnar from staying unbeaten in UFC. He went further and said Lesnar would still be champion today, at 49.
The comments got attention inside WWE too. According to Fightful Select, a number of people in WWE reached out about what Heyman said. The report, posted on November 2, says everyone agreed Heyman was just in "promoter mode."
What Paul Heyman said
Heyman has spoken about Lesnar's illness many times over the years. This time he put it in very strong terms. In the interview, Heyman said: "Diverticulitis robbed him of so much more great athletic accomplishment."
He also claimed nobody could compete with a healthy Lesnar. "There's nobody on this planet that could hang with him," Heyman said. He also said, "No one would get out of the first round with him."
Heyman also called Lesnar "the greatest athlete on the face of the planet."
Why WWE people were not taking it literally
The reaction reported by Fightful was not anger. It was closer to a knowing smile. Heyman has long been Lesnar's advocate on WWE television. Talking up "his client" is what he does best. The people who reached out to Fightful seemed to read the interview in that light.
The real record is more complicated. Lesnar won the UFC Heavyweight Championship, but he also lost to Cain Velasquez and Alistair Overeem before retiring from MMA in 2011. His battle with diverticulitis was serious. It required a bowel resection that saved his life. He came back for one more fight against Mark Hunt in 2016.
Age is another question. Randy Couture won the UFC Heavyweight title when he was nearly 44, which makes him the oldest champion in the company's history. Lesnar is now 49.
Lesnar is retired, for now
All of this comes three months after Lesnar walked away from wrestling. He lost to Oba Femi in a Hell in a Cell match at SummerSlam on August 1 in Minneapolis. Lesnar later told The Pat McAfee Show, "That's it for me in the squared circle."
Lesnar has said he wants to focus on his family, the outdoors and his children's sports. So Heyman's comments are not a sign of a real UFC comeback. Nothing we read suggests one is being planned.
WWE may not be fully done with him, though. Separate reports say some high-ranking WWE officials believe Lesnar could still have some involvement with WrestleMania 43. That remains a report, not a confirmed plan.
Our view and what to watch
In our view, this is classic Heyman. He is selling a legend, and he is very good at it. Nobody can prove what a healthy Lesnar would have done in UFC, and that is exactly why the claim works as a promo. The WWE reaction reported by Fightful suggests nobody inside the company sees it as more than that.
